Desert Gallery > The visitor center is a beautiful adobe style building which is a small museum, a gift shop, and information center.
Desert Gallery > Most people park in one of the designated areas along the road and wander into the dunes on their own. Each time you cross a new rise, something interesting pops into view. The best picture taking time is early morning and late afternoon just as it is most anyplace, but even more so here since the white sand tends to washout your pictures.
Desert Gallery > Some of the most interesting sites for me were the places where the dunes end and the "normal" Southern New Mexico desert begins.
Desert Gallery > The White Sands National Monument is just south of Alamogordo, New Mexico and well worth the trip. You pay three dollars and then follow a winding two lane road into the dunes. If you are willing to walk 30 minutes into them, you will see nothing but an endless sea of white sand --- no vegitation whatsoever.
Desert Gallery > The visitor center also has a lovely courtyard in which the traditional ceiling beam structure of the building can be plainly seen.
