The White Sands National Monument is just south of Alamogordo, New Mexico and well worth the trip. You pay three dollars and then follow a winding two lane road into the dunes. If you are willing to walk 30 minutes into them, you will see nothing but an endless sea of white sand --- no vegitation whatsoever.
